How Can Polar Bears Swim In Ice Cold Water?

Today in Science we asked the question: "How can polar bears swim in such cold water?" Here is what we did to investigate our question.

First - We put our hands in ice water. We did not keep them in long because it was TOO cold for us. We think Polar Bears would have liked it!

We thought that Polar Bears could keep warm because they have fur but we learned it is because they ........

have fat to keep them warm.

We wrapped our fingers in lard and when we put them back in the water we didnt get cold! We think all animals that live in really cold water must have lots of fat to keep them warm.

Building Inukshuks With Our Buddies

The mysterious stone figures known as inuksuit can be found throughout the circumpolar world. Inukshuk, the singular of inuksuit, means "in the likeness of a human" in the Inuit language. They are monuments made of unworked stones that are used by the Inuit for communication and survival. The traditional meaning of the inukshuk is "Someone was here" or "You are on the right path."

Jesse Ruben

What a wonderful time we had with New York City singer/song writter Jesse Ruben. Our school has been focused on "i can" and using Jesse's song "I Can" to help inspire us. (small I in I can because the I part is not the most important part)

The video we made with Jesse Ruben will soon be ready to view - stay tune
